@@mariafahey4124 No. I don’t use it.
@@buildingsheriff I was just concerned about your eyes
@@mariafahey4124 thank you. I appreciate your concern, but I’m a fully grown man able to look after myself.
@@buildingsheriff Cute like a puppy
What would the advice be for doing this on bricks that have holes in, so they are hollow inside.
@@robwalker4653 Try and drill on the thirds where the holes aren’t.
After pounding it down i got the 4x4 stuck in the spike and cant pull it out to put my actual stud in. Dont know what to do now
@@BackyardOfHorrors that’s a tough one. The best bet is to cut it off at the top of the spike and then drill in with an auger to remove the centre.
@@buildingsheriff First off, kudos on the response time, thank you 😂 Secondly, I screwed a 2x4 to the 4x4 and was able to free it hitting it for a few minutes lol racing the sun at this point, we're gonna make t
@@BackyardOfHorrors great stuff. I love an alternative solution. We all get there in the end.
Drilled into the wall for the first time today. The first drill attempt wasn't the straightest, but the second went it like a glove. Well chuffed. This video is spot on sir.
@@liamw6295 well done. You will now go from strength to strength. I’m pleased I could help.
If only the century old Victorian clay bricks of my house drilled as easy as those..modern bricks are piss poor compared to the bricks of yesteryear
Funny, the drainpipe bracket behind you is drilled into the mortar...
I love the conversation here. My job is small so I'm going for the mortar.
Thank you my good man answered all of my concerns.
One of the best videos on the internet, good quality, quick to the point and actual great pro tips that you don’t hear everyday. Mind blown.
Very kind of you to say so. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for answering a basic question! Everything I find seems to leave out the basics and you're supposed to just jump in at intermediate level. I don't want to have to guess then mess up interior brick that's in a prominent place in my house!
You’re welcome. We are all always learning.
Do you need to use inserts when connecting cooper to plastic or plastic to plastic?
Just for plastic pipes.
Would this be good enough for a pergola? Want to use 6x6 posts though.
Yes, but they do not do these in 6 x 6. 4 x 4 will easily be ample for a pergola. 6 x 6 is overkill in my opinion.
@@buildingsheriff thank you!
It feels like you have a scientific mindset (limiting movement uncertainty, gravity doing the work, etc). Subscribed!
what i hate the most is concrete wall but where i live the all ceiling is made of concrete so imagine if you want to hang a light
You guys can use any fittings and pipe you like, in my house always will be soldered copper,,i do insurance call outs ,cant understand why people think thermoplastic is ok for hot water, every time a thermostat fails - burst pipe,
Sure sure
Should I worry about gas or water pipes below ground? Or are these usually much lower than these fence spikes can reach?
That is a possibility. They are normally at least a foot underground. You would need to check your house plans.
Thank you 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thankyou so much! This was everything I needed in one video rather than other creators who break this up into 12 x 5 mins parts 😂.
👍👍
Doesn’t need any insert ?
No. Only polypipe does.
what about cinders block... same process?
So all of the shelves in my hours are on a slant. HAHAh So I am going to put these shelves somewhere else on the outdoor patio or just get a stand. That looked easy, but I don't want to mess it up. Thank you for the explanation.
If some light and long fitting like cable or electrical conduit, it's fine to drill into the mortar. This saves spoiling the face of numerous bricks and also easier to drill especially if you have very hard bricks.
Hello, thanks for this, really helpful. Do you think I can use these for decking posts too? It's not a huge area, but it's raised; about 3 foot from the ground and the side beams would also be attached to two outside walls. Any advice about using these instead of concreting the posts in? Thank you. Niki
Hi Niki. Yes. These are perfect for decking posts!
@@buildingsheriff Brilliant, thanks for speedy reply.
What about torque please for both drilling and screwing? What's ideal? Thanks!
0:50 That is exactly how cats pee 🤭
Best way to remove these?
I really like how you explain DIYers in plain language without fancy music or promotions. Great video. keep on truckin !
How do you drill a high up spot when you don't have your bodyweight to push it enough, If you're on a ladder for example. Any tips?
Sometimes my bits go into the brick, sometimes it doesn't. Gives me anxiety when I have to hang or do something on brick.
That was a very clean hole you drilled. Which is better--the cements or the plastic anchor especially when drilling holes for larger screws?
To be honest, they’re both the same if you get the anchor and drill diameter correct. It’s all about how the screw expands and causes static friction.
I tried to drill the brick on my house that was built in the 1930s and the bit skidded all over. The bricks seem to be made of some form of advanced Kryptonian alloy.
Proper solid bricks them old ones that size screw would go a quarter inch into a modern brick then into a hole or deep frog
I dont feel comfortable with your face being so close to all the particle dust. You really ought to wear safety glasses please.
You wear safety glasses. I’ll continue as I have for the past 30 years.
note for folk in the northern hemisphere, white spirit = mineral spirits

Just what I needed, i lost my Dad in 22 he was an expert at these things having being an electrician his whole working life. Thanks again 👍
That’s so tough. I’m sure he was very proud of you and I can tell from your short note that you loved him very much.
Thank you sir!
My pleasure Mr Jokester 🥊
The marking of the pipe, was something I did on every joint. (Not a plumber but competent DIY’er). Every cut done with proper tool, then cleaned the end which put a slight radius on the pipe end, then marked it. Reason for the marking helps when I was reaching in some awkward places. Most of the time you know the pipe has touched the end, but sometimes it was the mark that let me know all was good. First time, I plumed everything in my house, 7 radiators, no solder, no plumber, 7 years on and no leaks or problems. Take you r time, work methodically, and you will do a good job.
Just what I needed to know, that red brick can be drilled into - thanks for a great video.
You’re welcome. Maggie May - one of my favourite tracks!
Mate this is my project this weekend and your advice has helped sooo much! Thank you.
Good luck!
Instead of twisting the spike to off set, if you alternate sides with sledge hammer will it have go in straight instead of off setting?
Good thinking. It should.
To avoid misalignment of the hole, begin drilling into the brick face with the hammer action off and at a low speed. Once the drill bit has made a small indentation of about 2-3mm, you can then continue drilling with the hammer action on. Or you could use a centre punch first to avoid drill bit shift.
Great advice 🥊
Best hand sawing video ever buddy good job
Thanks. It’s a simple hand job…
I have used a wire brush on the paintbrush after cleaning latex, it does wanders softening the brush.
What about frog up or frog down ? You might have just drilled into a cavity in the frog
it doesnt have to be perfectly verticle. just close.
Oh cool. So my plan to mount a peg board for yarn storage should hold up then yay!
